Back-to-School Volunteer Fingerprinting Is Here: What Santa Clarita Parents and Coaches Need to Know

And every one of them hits the same requirement before they can set foot on campus: a completed fingerprint background check.

Why Schools Require Fingerprint Clearance
California school districts require Live Scan fingerprinting for volunteers who will have contact with students, whether that's coaching a team, chaperoning a field trip, or helping out in a classroom. The fingerprints are submitted electronically to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and, depending on the applicant type, the FBI, to check for any criminal history that would disqualify someone from working around children.
This isn't a formality specific to one school. It's a statewide requirement that applies across William S. Hart Union High School District, Newhall School District, Saugus Union School District, Sulphur Springs Union School District, Castaic Union School District, and every other district in the valley.
What Volunteers Need to Bring
Getting cleared is straightforward if you show up prepared:
A valid, government-issued photo ID. Driver's license, state ID, or passport.
The correct request form from your school or district. Districts issue applicant-specific paperwork tied to their ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) number and the correct applicant type code. Bringing the wrong form is the single most common reason a fingerprint submission gets delayed or has to be redone.

If you're not sure which form your district requires, contact your school's front office or volunteer coordinator before your appointment. Submitting under the wrong ORI number means the results go to the wrong requesting agency, and that's a problem nobody wants to untangle in October.
Why Timing Matters
Fingerprints are captured in a matter of minutes, but the background check itself runs through DOJ and, where required, FBI processing after submission. Districts often set hard deadlines before a volunteer can step onto campus or attend the first practice. Waiting until the week before your deadline means you're competing with every other parent and coach in the valley who had the same idea.
The smart move is to get scanned as early in the season as possible, well ahead of any district cutoff, so there's no scramble if anything needs to be resubmitted or clarified.
